Care Overview

The Process

Women living in Greater Sudbury can contact the clinic directly at 705-523-8000.  No physician referral is required.

A 30-minute initial appointment will be arranged with one of our midwives.

You are encouraged to bring your spouse/partner, and any other family members you wish.  This no obligation appointment is your opportunity to ask questions about midwifery care and our practice.  This is not a clinical visit, however the midwife will want to know generally about your health and medical history to evaluate if you are appropriate for midwifery care.

Midwives provide prenatal, birth, and postnatal care for women from conception to 6 weeks post delivery.  Like family doctors, midwives provide care to healthy, low risk women.  At the beginning of your pregnancy it is your choice to have either a midwife, a family doctor, or an obstetrician for your care.

If you choose midwifery care , a comprehensive health history and physical assessment visit will be booked after your initial appointment.  This is normally a double appointment, and your spouse/partner is welcome at this and all subsequent visits.

Blood work and other laboratory testing can normally be performed at our clinic.  Ultrasounds are performed off-site at local hospitals and diagnostic centers.  Records may be requested from other health care institutions who provided you with services prior to entering midwifery care.

Our goal is for you to have a safe and positive pregnancy and birth, with the best possible outcomes.  Research shows that early and regular prenatal care contributes to the detection of problems and prevention of complications.  The recommended schedule of visits is every 4 to 6 weeks until 28 weeks, every 2 to 3 weeks until 36 weeks, then every 7-10 days until delivery.  Our office hours are 8:30 – 4:30 Monday to Friday.

When your labour begins, a midwife from your team will be with you from the beginning of your active labour until 3 hours after the birth.  A second midwife is normally present for the delivery to provide assistance with the baby.

You will be discharged from Midwfery care 6 weeks after the birth of your baby.  Unless referred for a complication, there is no need for you or your baby to see anyone but your midwives during this period.
