The Sudbury Community Midwifery practice first opened its doors in 1993. As one of the first practices to open in Ontario after midwifery was legislated, many women will remember our first small clinic on Cedar St. downtown. Pioneered by midwives Anne Nixon and Holliday Tyson the practice began taking clients following its grand opening in November 1993. With the growing awareness and interest in midwifery it was clear that more midwives would be needed.
In 2000, with 5 full time midwives, it was apparent that we had outgrown our office space on Cedar St. In May 2000 we moved to our new home at 1571 Paris St. With ample free parking and more waiting room space we could now accommodate our busy clientele. The office has a separate library/play room as well as a group meeting area where prenatal classes are offered.
In July 2007 more renovations took place and we are able to offer an early labour suite (see photos) with private bathroom for women planning hospital births. The office is busy as we now have 8 full time midwives. We provide care to approximately 360 expecting women per year and have to date attended almost 3000 births.
While many of our clients choose to have their babies with us at the Sudbury Regional Hospital, approximately 1 out of every 5 births occurs in the clients’ home and many are now choosing water birth. Having a large and diverse practice group allows us to offer the energy, enthusiasm and new ideas of recent graduates coupled with the experience and knowledge of midwives with more than a decade of clinical practice.
